History of Grama Panchayat
Mullankolli Gram Panchayat, located in the northeastern border areas of Wayanad district, is a remarkable area with its natural resources, agricultural richness and cultural diversity. This area, adjacent to the Kerala-Karnataka border, still maintains a rural lifestyle that combines tribal traditions and agrarian lifestyle. With the increasing importance of rural development and participatory governance in the post-independence era, the local government systems in the area gained further strength.
Following the strengthening of the Panchayat Raj system in Kerala, Mullankolli area was formed as part of the Gram Panchayat constitution. The formation of the Gram Panchayat aimed to meet the basic needs of the local people and to implement village development activities efficiently. In the beginning, the main activities of the Panchayat were focused on drinking water supply, construction of village roads, health and sanitation activities, and development of public education facilities.
Over time, the scope of the Panchayat's activities expanded. The Panchayat led the comprehensive development of the village by implementing various projects in the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry, small-scale industries, women's empowerment, and social welfare projects. Mullankolli Panchayat has played a crucial role in strengthening the agricultural tradition of Wayanad. Several schemes have been implemented to develop the cultivation of agricultural crops like paddy, pepper, ginger, banana and coffee and to provide technical assistance and encouragement to the farmers.
The presence of tribal communities in the population of the panchayat is notable. The panchayat is implementing various welfare schemes for their socio-educational progress. The panchayat has played a major role in effectively delivering government schemes to the people in the areas of housing construction, drinking water facilities, educational assistance and health services. The growth of women's self-help groups and Kudumbashree activities has been a great support for women empowerment in the village.
In recent times, the services of the panchayat have become more people-friendly with the help of digital technology. The panchayat is trying to provide services like birth and death registration, tax payment, certificate distribution and grievance redressal system in a faster and more transparent manner through online systems. Green development, sanitation activities, rainwater harvesting, and promotion of organic farming also play an important role in the development activities of the panchayat.
Mullankolli Grama Panchayat actively participated in public welfare activities during times of crisis such as floods and epidemics. People's representatives, employees, and volunteers performed exemplary service in relief activities, health awareness, food grain distribution, and preventive activities.
